Is literacy in danger because of technology? Will students stop reading and writing all together because they spend lots of time on the computer?

I have talked to some parents who legitimately worry about their children slipping away from the traditional ways of books, pen and paper. Afraid of change and yearning for a return to the “good old times,” some worry that technology they do not understand or use will destroy the children’s motivations to read and write. Not familiar with sites such as Facebook, Twitter, deviantART, YouTube and other blogs or forums, some parents cannot participate in the activities of their children, adding a fear of being disconnected from their children and leaving them with feelings of inadequacy.

Along the same lines, science fiction shows such as Syfy’s upcoming Caprica, will display a world where technology is run amok, used by a lazier younger generation. Yet it’s doing the exact opposite in our world: it’s sparking a definite, driven creativity that’s enabled by technology, rather than hampered or perverted by it.

It's a declaration of existence. A statement announcing out to the world that it is here! I registered IDEAS as an LLC last Friday, the 8th of May, 2009. Sadly, the name was taken. So I had to register the company under the long name: Idea Development Empowering Architects for a better Society. Now, there has been a lot of confusion surrounding this name, so I want to break it down, Merriam-Webster style.

Idea - a formulated thought or opinion

At IDEAS, any idea is fair game. It doesn't have to be an engineering problem. It could be a science problem, a social problem, anything. We are focusing on making people's lives easier and better. If an idea comes through the door that satisfies this requirement, it is fare game.

Development - the act, process, or result of developing

At IDEAS, the thinker/developer/what have you, works on their idea with the help of their peers. It is that simple. They work on their idea. No superfluous paperwork, no commutes, no worries. They come, they think, they change the world.

Empowering - to promote the self-actualization or influence of

So these thinkers can focus on only their work, IDEAS takes care of everything else: Room and Board, Health Insurance, we even give them a stipend! It's kind of like going to college on a full ride, except instead of classes they are working on getting their ideas to fruition.

Architects - a person who designs and guides a plan or undertaking

This word has been the main cause of confusion. Yes, an architect is someone who designs buildings, but it can have a more general reference, one that is inclusive to anyone working on a plan or undertaking. Anyone working on an idea is an architect.

for a better Society - a community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, and collective activities and interests

We hope to have a global impact with our endeavors. The projects we hope to work on will change lives across the globe, not just to those who can afford them. For example, a new solution for energy production would serve everyone, not just a small population. We would work to promote it in our modern society, as well as fundraise to develop these solutions in third world societies. It is within everyone's interest to bring everyone up the ladder, not just those that are already on top. In order for our world to advance responsibly into the twenty-first century, we have to bring everyone up to the same rung; otherwise we are just propagating the social divide that already plagues our global society.

We are seeking to change the way the world works. To change the way we think about thinking about ideas, and hopefully we'll develop some nice technology along the way. Do not think however that we will be working on the next best toaster oven. The projects at IDEAS will all be unique, things that haven't been invented yet, things that no one has thought of yet. Anyone can find improvements to an already existing idea. To develop a truly novel idea, now that is a completely different animal. We seek to introduce new ideas into the world, and the icing on the cake is… We want YOU to be a part of it. This is the Founder's blog. Here I will keep you up to date on the happenings as IDEAS moves from dreams to reality. I hope you all will join me as we change the world.

Best Regards,

David B Mittelman

Founder of IDEAS
